Trump Seeks Erdogan's Support to Broker Peace in Ukraine Conflict

WASHINGTON — Former US President Donald Trump expressed his intention on May 5 to collaborate with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to bring an end to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This announcement came after a phone discussion between the two leaders.

In a post shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump mentioned that Erdogan had extended an invitation for him to visit Turkey, while also planning to meet him in Washington.

“I’m eager to join forces with President Erdogan to put a stop to the senseless and deadly war between Russia and Ukraine — and to do it NOW!” Trump wrote.

Trump, who has repeatedly vowed that he could resolve the Ukraine crisis within 24 hours if elected for a second term in January, has been vocal about urging both Kyiv and Moscow to consider a ceasefire.

Turkey, a NATO ally, has maintained balanced ties with both Russia and Ukraine since the outbreak of the war, even hosting peace talks on two occasions in an effort to end hostilities.

During their call, the two leaders also touched on several pressing international issues, including the situations in Syria and Gaza. Trump described their exchange as a "very good and productive" conversation.

Reflecting on his previous tenure from 2017 to 2021, Trump emphasized the strong and “excellent” relationship he had with Erdogan during his presidency.

According to a statement from Erdogan’s office, the Turkish leader suggested that US steps to ease sanctions on Syria could help stabilize the country, which has been ravaged by years of war.

Washington, however, maintains that any easing of sanctions following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December will require concrete steps by Syria’s new leadership, particularly regarding anti-terrorism measures.

Erdogan also expressed appreciation for Trump’s stance on pursuing peace, referencing the conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and negotiations with Iran. He stressed the need for uninterrupted humanitarian aid to reach the people of Gaza, who have been suffering amid escalating violence.

Since March, Israel has blocked all assistance to the 2.4 million residents of Gaza, and its security Cabinet has approved expanded military operations aimed at taking full control of the territory.

Trump is also scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates in the coming week. — AFP
