Jokowi defends diploma, legality of past presidency in court
Indonesia’s former president Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, has returned to his hometown in Solo, Central Java, to live as an ordinary citizen but now faces two lawsuits, one of which – the authenticity of his tertiary education diploma – challenges the legality of his past presidency.
The State Court of Solo opened legal proceedings on 24 April to examine the claims concerning Jokowi’s diploma as well as a separate lawsuit concerning an unfulfilled promise made by Jokowi during his stint as mayor of Surakarta to facilitate the mass production of the locally made Esemka car.
Jokowi, the Solo election committee, the Solo State Junior High School 6, and the UGM in Yogyakarta, from which he graduated, were defendants in the case concerning Jokowi’s diploma.
